War of the Elves and Sauron

In the year 1695 of the Second Age, Sauron marched an army out of Mordor and around the southern end of the Misty Mountains to destroy Eregion, the Noldorin realm of the jewel-smiths, and take back the Rings of Power its craftsmen had made behind his back. He had spent ninety years raising that army, and he was already too late. The Three had been carried out of the city before his troops crossed the border. What followed was eight years that reshaped Middle-earth. Celebrimbor died on the steps of the Mírdain's hall, giving up the Seven under torture and the Three never, and Sauron carried his body as a battle standard against Elrond. Durin III's Dwarves saved Elrond's army and then shut the gates of Moria for four thousand years. The Men of Minhiriath fought for Sauron because Númenor had been clear-cutting their forests for six centuries. And a beaten commander fell back into a hidden gorge on the Bruinen and accidentally founded Rivendell.
