A day-book of the War of the Ring
Meanwhile
The Lord of the Rings, day by day: the last month of the Third Age on one map.Tolkien wrote the end of The Lord of the Rings as stories that keep interrupting each other. You leave Frodo on a stair in the dark and do not see him again for two hundred pages; you sit through the siege of a city without knowing that the hobbit you are worried about is, that same night, four days' walk to the east. He kept the calendar in Appendix B so that it would all fit. This page draws the calendar. Pick a day, and see where everyone was.
Click a thread to follow it alone · ← → step the days · scroll or pinch to zoom, drag to pan · a hollow ring is where a thread was last seen
Everything on the chart is Appendix B first and the chapters second. Where the Appendix dates a thing, it is on that day. Where it is silent and a chapter makes the placement plain, the entry is marked placed from the chapter. Where neither will say, the thread simply keeps its last position, hollow, until the book picks it up again. Nobody is moved for tidiness.
A few things only show up when you lay the threads side by side. The horn Boromir blows on the twenty-sixth is heard in Minas Tirith the same day. The darkness that begins to flow out of Mordor on the ninth is seen that night by Frodo under the mountains, by Gandalf and Pippin riding to the City, and by the Riders at Dunharrow the next morning. And on the fifteenth Tolkien cuts between threads in a single sentence: the Sun rising over the Vale of Anduin, the south-west wind blowing, and Théoden lying dying on the Pelennor, all seen from a ridge in Mordor.
After the twenty-fifth the Appendix goes on without us. On the twenty-seventh Bard and Thorin Stonehelm drive the enemy from Dale; on the twenty-eighth Celeborn crosses Anduin and the taking of Dol Guldur begins; on the eighth of April the Ring-bearers are honoured on the Field of Cormallen; and on the first of May Aragorn is crowned.
