Episode
Sauron Was Good Once. That's the Point.
"Nothing is evil in the beginning. Even Sauron was not so." Elrond says it at the Council of Rivendell as settled fact - but he says it while refusing to touch the Ring, and the real subject of that sentence is himself. This episode treats Tolkien's most quoted line about evil as an argument rather than trivia, and asks what it costs to believe it. Tolkien said the same thing in his own voice: absolute evil is "Zero," an impossibility, because evil is a subtraction and nothing can be built out of subtraction alone. Sauron's ruin began in a real virtue - the love of order - and Tolkien filed him with "reformers who want to hurry up with reconstruction." But the doctrine has a body count. Manwe pardoned Melkor on exactly this reasoning and got the Darkening of Valinor. Osse took the same mercy and kept it. Sauron refused probation before Eonwe out of shame - and how anyone could know stays open.
