Eärendil
The Mariner Who Became a StarEärendil was promised before he was born. Huor, dying at the Battle of Unnumbered Tears, told Turgon that a new star would arise from their two houses, and Ulmo had already chosen Tuor to father a hope beyond his sight. Born in Gondolin in 503 of the First Age with a light in his face, Eärendil built Vingilot with Círdan and sailed west looking for his lost parents as much as for the Valar. With Elwing's Silmaril on his brow he reached Valinor, walked through an empty Tirion, pleaded for Elves and Men, and won. The price was permanent exile and an immortality he never wanted, chosen for Elwing's sake. Set in the sky as Gil-Estel, he killed Ancalagon the Black and still guards the Door of Night. His star guided the Edain to Númenor and lit Galadriel's phial in Shelob's lair, and Frodo's cry, Aiya Eärendil Elenion Ancalima, translates the one Old English line that started Tolkien's whole mythology in 1914.
