Celebrimbor Gave Away What Fëanor Killed For.
Tolkien never said Celebrimbor out-crafted his grandfather. The smiths of Eregion surpassed all who ever wrought, "save only Fëanor himself," and Celebrimbor spent his life wanting to rival Fëanor's fame. The reversal was never skill. It was motive. Fëanor made three great things and refused to release them, and the world went dark. Celebrimbor made three great things and gave every one away, then died under Sauron's torture in 1697 rather than say where they'd gone. This episode traces the man: the break with Curufin at Nargothrond in 465, the mother who refused the rebellion, the kingdom founded on Khazad-dum's mithril, the Doors of Durin he signed with the Dwarf Narvi, the Elessar he made for Galadriel, and the sortie Durin III led out of Moria on the day he died. It also faces the awkward truth that Tolkien kept rewriting who Celebrimbor even was.
