Nineteen Rings and One Lie

How the Rings of Power Were Made

Everyone can recite the ring-verse, but the three-seven-nine split was never a plan. It was an inventory taken in a burned city. Walking the twenty rings in the order Tolkien actually built them tells a different story: Annatar arriving at Eregion in 1200 of the Second Age while Gil-galad shut him out of Lindon, three centuries of uncounted lesser rings the smiths of the Gwaith-i-Mirdain dismissed as practice work, then sixteen Great Rings made by Elves, for Elves. Celebrimbor made Narya, Nenya and Vilya last of all, alone, after the teacher had gone, and they were subject to the One anyway. Sauron made exactly one ring, in Orodruin, plain and ungemmed. His plan died the moment he spoke the words aloud. Ninety-three years later Ost-in-Edhil fell, and he sorted the salvage into Dwarves and Men. Even that order was a late decision Tolkien made against a printing deadline.
