Utumno

Utumno was the first fortress Melkor ever delved, a pit driven deep beneath the Iron Mountains of the far north before the Elves had even awakened. Its very name means the Deep-hidden, and it became the template for every dark stronghold that followed. From its security Melkor found the confidence to cast down the Two Lamps and end the Spring of Arda, and within its buried galleries he gathered the Balrogs and bred the first Orcs in mockery of the Elves, though Tolkien himself could never settle how. When the Valar finally broke its gates and chained Melkor, they left the deepest vaults unsearched, and Sauron they did not find. That one failure seeded Angband, Dol Guldur, Barad-dur, the Balrog of Moria, and the whole later history of evil, the word Udun echoing from Morgoth's first hell to a wizard on a bridge in Moria.
