The Lost Chapters: What Colbert's New LOTR Movie Will Restore

Jun 02, 2026 · 31:13

In March 2026 Stephen Colbert announced Shadow of the Past, a new live-action Lord of the Rings film adapting the six chapters Peter Jackson cut in 2001 — the Conspiracy at Crickhollow, the Old Forest, Tom Bombadil, and the Barrow-downs. Inside those chapters sits a piece of buried architecture: a dagger forged in Arthedain to fight Angmar, buried with the last prince of Cardolan in T.A. 1409, and pulled by Merry off a wight's treasure pile sixteen hundred and ten years later. That same blade breaks the Witch-king's spell at the Pelennor Fields. The chapters Jackson cut were not digressions — they were the gear that made the clock keep time. The episode also unpacks Bombadil as the one being the Ring cannot touch, the wights as the Witch-king's posthumous garrison, and Sam's daughter Elanor as the film's memory-keeper protagonist.
