Elendil the Tall

Elendil the Tall stands as one of Tolkien's most consequential mortal characters, yet often goes unnoticed in the shadow of the heroes he made possible. Last Lord of Andunie and leader of the Faithful, he inherited a multi-generational dissent that kept Elven friendship and the old worship alive against the corrupted kings of Numenor. When the wave came, he loaded a civilization into nine ships, escaped the Downfall, and founded the Realms in Exile—Arnor and Gondor. He architected a palantir network and bound a dynasty in seven Quenya words on a beach. Three thousand years later, those same words were spoken at Aragorn's coronation. He died wrestling Sauron on Orodruin, his sword Narsil shattering beneath him, the broken hilt-shard becoming the very blade that cut the Ring from the Dark Lord's hand.
