Witch-king of Angmar: Rise & Fall of the Nazgul Lord | Tolkien Explained

Jul 17, 2026 · 22:38

The Witch-king of Angmar was Sauron's greatest captain and the chief of the nine Nazgul, a mortal king who traded his name, face, and life for a Ring of Power and became a crown set upon no head. This episode traces his full arc: the patient 675-year war of attrition that ground the Dunedain North-kingdom of Arnor to dust, the terror of the Black Breath that broke armies before a sword was drawn, and the thousand-year-old prophecy of Glorfindel that no man's hand would fell him. From the captured tower of Minas Morgul he ended the line of Gondor's kings, luring Earnur to his death. Then, at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, he met Eowyn and the hobbit Merry. The twist is where Merry's blade came from: a barrow of the very North-kingdom the Witch-king had annihilated. The kingdom he destroyed forged the weapon that unmade him.
