Mithril

The Metal That Saved Middle-earth

Mithril -- the only mineral Tolkien invented for Middle-earth -- anchors a story that stretches from the heights of Elf-Dwarf cooperation to the depths of civilizational ruin. Discovered beneath the Misty Mountains in Khazad-dum, this imperishable metal drew Celebrimbor's Noldor to settle in nearby Eregion, forging the closest friendship between Elves and Dwarves in history. Together they built the Doors of Durin, forged Nenya from mithril, and created the conditions Sauron would exploit to forge the Rings of Power. As Numenor drowned and Aman was removed from the world, Moria became the sole remaining source -- and the Dwarves, unable to stop reaching for it, mined too deep and woke a Balrog. Yet a single mithril coat, given freely from Thorin to Bilbo to Frodo, saved the Ring-bearer's life three times on the road to Mordor. Worth more than the entire Shire, the coat reveals Tolkien's moral architecture: seized, mithril brings destruction; given, it brings salvation.
