Why Sauron Never Conquered Gil-galad
Gil-galad held the crown of the Noldor in exile for roughly thirty-five centuries, longer than the entire Third Age. He founded Lindon on the wreckage of drowned Beleriand, refused Sauron's Annatar disguise when almost every other Elf-lord was taken in, spent eight hundred years writing to Numenor for help that mostly never came, and died on the slopes of Orodruin in the act of bringing Sauron down. And Tolkien never settled who he was. Four different fathers across four decades of drafting - Feanor, Felagund, Fingon, Orodreth - with Christopher Tolkien admitting in print it would have been better to leave the question blank. Three unreconciled accounts of his death. No wife, no heir, no grave, and not one line of dialogue in The Silmarillion. What survives him is twelve lines of ballad in Sam Gamgee's mouth below Weathertop, and a bog full of drowned Elvish faces called the Dead Marshes.
