Rivendell
Why the Last Homely House Had to FadeImladris began not as a paradise but as a redoubt: in S.A. 1697, Elrond gathered the survivors of fallen Eregion and made a stand in a hidden gorge of the Bruinen. The valley nearly died in its first siege, saved only by Numenorean swords. Its famous timeless peace was the work of Vilya, the Ring of Air, whose power held decay at bay and embalmed time itself. Behind the singing and the healing, Rivendell was also a war-forge that mustered the Last Alliance, a fortress that broke Angmar, and the cradle that raised Aragorn in secret as Estel. There the Council of Elrond launched the Quest to destroy the One Ring, reforged Narsil into Anduril, and named the Fellowship. Yet that same Quest doomed the valley: when the Ring fell, Vilya failed and Rivendell faded. Tolkien never resolves whether preserving the world was the Elves greatest grace or their gentlest mistake.
