Elwing the White: The Forgotten Queen of Eärendil's Tale | Silmarillion

Jun 05, 2026 · 27:08

Elwing the White is the forgotten keystone of Tolkien's legendarium — the great-granddaughter of Melian and Thingol, granddaughter of Beren and Lúthien, last child of Doriath, and bearer of the Silmaril that Fëanor's sons had killed three generations of her family to reclaim. Surviving the Second Kinslaying as a toddler, she grew up at the Havens of Sirion, married Eärendil, and refused to surrender the jewel when the Fëanorians came again. Trapped at the cliff with her sons taken, she cast herself into the sea — and Ulmo himself rose to catch her, transforming her into a great white bird who carried the Silmaril to Vingilot. Her choice to be counted among the Firstborn, spoken for the sake of Lúthien, founded the entire Half-elven precedent that would one day make Elros king of Númenor and Aragorn heir of kings.
