Aragorn: The 87 Lost Years Tolkien Hid From You | LOTR Deep Dive

Jul 24, 2026 · 33:09

Between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring lie eighty-seven years of Aragorn's life that Tolkien deliberately left almost off the page. This episode reconstructs those lost decades from the Appendices, Unfinished Tales, and the Letters. Raised in Rivendell under the false name Estel, Aragorn learns his true lineage at twenty, accepts an impossible bridal price for Arwen, and walks into the wild. He becomes Strider in the North, then Thorongil in the South, serving Thengel of Rohan and Ecthelion of Gondor, burning the Corsair fleet at Umbar before vanishing into Harad and Rhun where the stars are strange. He passes through Moria's East-gate. He hunts Gollum for sixteen years from the vales of Anduin to the borders of Mordor, learning the operational mercy that Frodo will inherit. By the time he is mocked as Strider in the Prancing Pony, he has practiced the refusal of easy power so many times that the One Ring no longer interests him.
