The Origin of Hobbits

Every people in Middle-earth gets a first scene. Elves wake at Cuiviénen under starlight, Men at Hildórien at the first sunrise, Dwarves beneath the Misty Mountains at Aulë's forge, Ents because Yavanna asked. Hobbits have nothing - no awakening, no maker, and in The Silmarillion only four mentions, all in the final chapter, all under names Elves and Men gave them. This episode follows that blank page. The dated record begins at Third Age 1050, the same line that darkens Greenwood, and runs through the three breeds - Harfoots, Stoors and Fallohides - to Marcho and Blanco founding the Shire in 1601 on a lease from a dying kingdom. It traces the etymology Tolkien built instead of a myth, kûd-dûkan to holbytla to hobbit, then Sméagol's Stoors by the Gladden, and finally the blank exam leaf around 1929 where the word was scrawled by a man who said he never knew why. The gap turns out to be Sauron's blind spot, and the reason hobbits could win.
