Middle-earth Battles Ranked
Numbers Tolkien Never WroteTolkien counted nineteen dead hobbits at the Battle of Bywater and recorded every name. He gave no casualty figure at all for the Pelennor Fields, and none for the War of Wrath, the largest battle in the history of Arda. That inversion runs the whole length of the legendarium, and it makes ranking Middle-earth's wars far stranger than it looks. This episode works through the evidence axis by axis. The numbers Tolkien actually wrote against the ones fans quote. The Shire's two battles, one of them a golf joke. The four-hundred-year Siege of Angband and the seven-year siege of Barad-dur, ranked by the clock. Azanulbizar, Fornost and the Battle of the Camp, ranked by what winning bought. The unwritten war in the north, where Dain Ironfoot and King Brand die in four sentences of an appendix. And the league table the Elves kept themselves, encoded in names like Nirnaeth Arnoediad and Dagor Bragollach. The bigger the war, the emptier the page.
