The Story

Rohan is the country Cirion of Gondor gave to Eorl the Young when the Éothéod rode south to repay an old debt. They became the Rohirrim, the horse-lords of the Mark, and for five hundred years their lords kept the wide green plain, watching the Gap and answering Gondor's red arrow when it came.

Théoden came late but he came. He rode out of Edoras to Helm's Deep, and from Helm's Deep across all the country to the Pelennor, and there he charged the line of the Witch-king's host singing, and there he fell. Éowyn his sister-daughter slew the Lord of the Nazgûl on that field, where no man could. Songs are still sung of the Ride of the Rohirrim at the day's hinge of the Third Age.

The Land

Wide horse-country between Fangorn Forest and the White Mountains, a long green plain cut by three rivers running south out of the mountains.

  • Edoras, the king's seat on a hill in the country's centre, with Meduseld the Golden Hall at its summit.
  • Helm's Deep, the fortress carved into the mountain wall above the Glittering Caves, in the Westfold.
  • The Gap of Rohan, the door between the Misty and White Mountains in the northwest, with Isengard guarding its northern end.
  • The Wold, the open grasslands in the northeast.
  • Westfold & Eastfold, the country west and east of Edoras.
  • Entwash, Snowbourn, Isen, the rivers running south from the mountains across the plain.
