Beren and Luthien: The Love Story That Defeated Morgoth | Silmarillion Explained

The tale of Beren and Luthien stands at the heart of Tolkien's legendarium, a story the professor called "the kernel of the mythology" and inscribed on his own gravestone beside his wife Edith's name. Beren was a mortal outlaw, the sole survivor of his father's slaughtered band, who wandered into the enchanted kingdom of Doriath and fell in love with Luthien, daughter of King Thingol and the Maia Melian. Demanded to bring a Silmaril from Morgoth's crown as bride-price, Beren undertook an impossible quest, but it was Luthien who accomplished its greatest victories: defeating Sauron where Finrod fell, enchanting Morgoth himself to sleep, and finally singing before Mandos with such sorrow that she moved the Vala of Death to pity.
